The quick answer.

Choose a dash cam by deciding whether you need front-only, front-and-rear, or cabin coverage first. Then compare recording quality, a supported high-endurance memory card, installation requirements, and the power accessories needed for parking recording.

Choose the camera view before the specification

A front camera records the road ahead. A front-and-rear kit adds a separate view through the rear window. A cabin camera records inside the vehicle and serves a different purpose. Decide which views matter to your routine before comparing resolution. A rear camera also creates an installation task: the cable needs a suitable route through your vehicle.

Treat resolution as one part of the picture

4K is a useful specification, but it does not establish how a camera performs in every scene. Sensor, exposure, reflections, weather, position and motion all influence footage. Look for representative sample clips from the exact model and configuration. Do not assume a front-camera specification applies to every camera in a multi-channel kit.

Budget for a working system

Include the camera, a compatible memory card, power accessories and any professional installation in your budget. VIOFO’s A229 Pro 2CH, for example, specifies 4K front and 2K rear recording, support for microSD cards up to 512GB, and a separately purchased compatible hardwire kit for parking recording. A headline camera price is not always the cost of a complete installation.

Plan parking recording carefully

Recording while parked is a different power arrangement from recording during a drive. Read the model’s instructions for supported parking modes and compatible power accessories. Confirm the hardwire kit, low-voltage protection and installation requirements for your vehicle. Do not buy an accessory on the assumption that any USB power supply will enable every parking feature.

Check the finished installation

Keep the camera’s view clear and route cables according to the vehicle and camera guidance, especially around airbags. Once installed, play back footage from every channel. Check the clock, learn how to protect a clip and practise exporting a file. A camera that is easy to maintain is more useful than one whose settings you never revisit.

Your questions, answered.

Is a 4K dash cam always better?

Resolution alone does not establish recording quality. Compare the exact camera, sensor, sample footage, mounting position and the conditions in which you drive.

Do I need a separate memory card?

Check the kit contents. The A229 Pro 2CH requires a separately purchased compatible microSD card.
